NAEMT’s Geriatric Education for EMS course prepares prehospital practitioners to respond to, assess, and care for this fast-growing patient population. This third edition of the course strengthens and enhances practitioners’ ability to provide the best care for older adults in every community.

The GEMS course helps EMS practitioners learn to conduct a comprehensive assessment of geriatric patients. Because the aging process affects all body systems, NAEMT’s course provides an overview of changes that occur as people age and describes how those changes can impact patient presentation.  Incorporation of the GEMS Diamond (Geriatric, Environmental, Medical, and Social assessments) can help practitioners formulate a holistic diagnostic and treatment approach.

The third edition of GEMS addresses the following topics:

  • Changes with age and assessment of the older patient
  • Polypharmacy and Toxicity in Older Patients
  • Respiratory Emergencies
  • Cardiovascular Emergencies
  • Trauma
  • Other Medical Disorders
  • Neurologic Emergencies
  • Elder Maltreatment and Psychosocial Emergencies
  • End-of-Life and Palliative Care
  • Disaster Triage and Transporting Older Patients
  • Left Ventricular Assist Devices
  • Skin Disorders
  • Ventilators
  • Urinary Catheter and Colostomy Bag Care
  • Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators

The 8-hour course is appropriate for EMTs, paramedics, emergency medical responders, nurses, physician assistants and physicians. GEMS is accredited by CAPCE and recognized by NREMT.

You are required to have the current textbook for this course. If you already own one or have access to one before, during, and after the class, you do not need to purchase one here. Please choose from the following optional items:

AHA STUDENT MANUAL AND TEXTBOOK POLICY

Each student must have the current, appropriate course textbook of their own readily available for use before, during, and after the course.

Textbooks are designed for individual use and are an integral part of the student’s education. Students may reuse their textbooks during renewals or updates UNTIL NEW SCIENCE GUIDELINES ARE PUBLISHED. (i.e. 2020 AHA Update)

The American Heart Association (AHA) designs their resuscitation courses using the most current educational design concepts. In order to maximize the students’ learning potential and keep course length manageable, the AHA have designed the classroom courses with the intent that students will have the opportunity to study the course materials outside of the class itself. It is necessary that students have access to student manuals before, during, and after each course, especially if the students are less familiar with the skills.

ARES BOOK POLICY

NO BOOKS may be returned or refunded for any reason. Books may not be issued during the course and then returned for a refund; this includes if it has been unopened. Books may also not be shared during the course; this is against American Heart Association rules and guidelines. Per AHA Rules, each student must have their own current book in order to attend an AHA course.
